Granite Bay’s roots date back to the early 1550s when gold miners first settled the banks of the American River. This area was initially known as “Granite Bar,” a small mining camp just below another mining area. Granite Bar was changed to Granite Bay for the granite rock quarried from the banks that were used for the Folsom Dam. Cattle ranchers also took advantage of water and grassy slopes.

The modern history of the area dates back to the 1970s with the steady development of housing along the bay. In 1987, the Placer County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution naming Granite Bay an officially designated unincorporated community. Today, Granite Bay is a community with a storied past and a bright future.
